Every business is required to pay a landfill tax when they send general waste to landfill. This is charged at a standard rate of £91.35 per tonne from April 2019, and at lower rate of £2.90 per tonne (for inert and inactive waste, such as building materials). From April 2020, the charge will rise to a standard rate of £94.15 per tonne and a lower rate of £3.00 per tonne.
