In 1999, a tax was applied to all waste disposed at landfill sites in an attempt to reduce the UK's reliance on landfill sites, encourage greater levels of recycling and reflect the serious impact landfill has on the environment.

Since 1999, the tax has risen every year and this is likely to continue. There are different rates depending on the materials being sent to landfill and regional tax rates can vary.

In only 3 years, the landfill tax doubled and now stands at £84.40 per tonne as a standard rate and £2.65/tonne at a lower rate.
