Choosing the right baler for your business

A guide from phs Wastekit

With a legal spotlight shone on waste segregation and recycling in recent months, we take a look at how to choose the right baler for your business.

The Welsh Government introduced a law at the end of 2024 that requires all workplaces to separate recyclable materials in the same way that most householders do. It looks likely that England will also follow suit.

The simplest way to separate recyclable materials in the workplace, and better manage your business waste streams, is by using a baler machine. Balers compact and wrap recyclable materials like cardboard and plastic into bales that can then be sold to recycling companies for a rebate.

Choosing the right size baler

Before embarking on your baler journey, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself:

It is key to understand what types of waste the business is producing and in what quantities and sizes. This will help you, and our team at phs Wastekit, to ensure you get the right equipment for your specific needs.

If you aren’t sure about your waste streams and volumes, our experienced team at phs Wastekit can help. We do this every day and work with businesses of all sizes in a wide range of sectors, so we know our waste!

As a rule of thumb, here is a guide to the size of baler you may need, depending on the volume/size of cardboard or plastic produced per week.

- 200 kilos and under per week – small baler
- 200-800 kilos per week – mid-size baler
- 800 kilos – 3 tonnes per week – mill-size baler

    Small baler

Our small baler range includes the 3100, 3110, 3115, 504 and the 605 machines.

These are ideal for locations where space is an issue and cardboard and soft plastic volumes are low, such as small retail outlets, small manufacturing units, takeaway restaurants or small hotels. They can also be useful secondary balers for an additional waste stream if you already have a larger baler.

These machines are cheap to run and maintain and are available to purchase or rent on a fully maintained agreement from phs Wastekit, helping you to reduce labour time and add an element of sustainability to the business. Small balers can produce a rebate in certain circumstances.

    Mid-size baler

Our mid-size baler range includes the 3400, 8020, 9020 and the 825 machines.

They are perfect for locations where space isn’t an issue, and the quantity of materials is higher and larger in size. Examples of locations that could benefit from a mid-size baler are larger hotels, medium-sized caravan parks, production sites, large retail outlets and larger warehouses.

These machines can be used for soft plastic, rigid plastic and cardboard and often help to generate a good revenue stream for the business through recycling rebates. They can also come as multi-chamber machines to process two different waste streams in one.

These machines are cheap to run and maintain and have a good medium price point. They are available to purchase or rent on a fully maintained agreement from phs Wastekit.

    Mill-size baler

Our mill-size baler range includes the 3810, 3600, 860 and 1160 Eco machines. They can be semi or fully automatic.

Large or mill-size balers are ideal for locations where waste volumes are large and space is not an issue. Most machines of this size are located outside. Locations that can benefit from a mill-size baler include holiday resorts, large-scale manufacturing sites, large supermarkets and large distribution sites.

Mill-size balers dramatically reduce labour time and costs and markedly increase sustainability. They can also generate generous rebates, creating a significant revenue stream for the business.

Although they have a higher price point than smaller models, the return on investment (ROI) is fast. They are available to purchase or rent on a fully maintained agreement from phs Wastekit.

    Multi chamber balers

Our multi chamber range includes the 5070, 8020 and 9020 balers.

These allow your cardboard and plastic waste to be separated and baled in one machine, offering a simple easy solution that is ideal for any business setting. They come in small, medium or large depending on the volume of waste you are dealing with.

Multi chamber balers take up less space and can deal with higher volumes by having a machine with up to four separate chambers to better manage your waste streams for the greatest savings and efficiencies.
