phs Wastekit helps Gardiners to boost recycling rebates by 240%

phs Wastekit has been working with the UK's leading distributor of global footwear and workwear brands to increase its recycling rebate for cardboard by 240%.

Gardiners Bros is a fast-growing business, which has expanded from one 48,000 sq ft unit to two units totalling 172,000 sq ft in just two years. With this growth came an increase in waste material, with the business generating over 280 tonnes of cardboard for recycling in a year. phs Wastekit has been working closely with the team at Gardiners to ensure they maintain their reputation for excellence in recycling and sustainability during their growth.

The team took on a dock-mounted semi-automatic baler from Wastekit to help manage with the increase in their cardboard and recycling needs. The baler, which compacts cardboard into mill size bales to be sold for rebates, sees the bales go straight into a standing lorry to ensure the cardboard stays dry and in the best quality for recycling. The lorry takes the bales directly to a paper mill less than two miles away, cutting out the need for a waste handler and reducing the business’ waste footprint.

The new machine has also allowed Gardiners to increase the amount of rebate it receives for its bales thanks to the increased efficiency and capacity of the baler. Gardiners’ previous compactor saw the business receiving around £25 per tonne of cardboard in rebates, but the new kit from Wastekit is delivering £65-£85 per tonne, an increase of up to 240%.

George Gates, HSE Manager for Gardiners said:

We take sustainability very seriously. We want to be sure we are doing the right thing for our community and the environment, and increasingly our clients are demanding that as part of their procurement process.  Our new machine from phs Wastekit can handle much bigger volumes of waste and is reliable and easy to use, reducing any pressure on our team. It makes recycling much simpler and streamlines our waste management processes. It is also cost-effective, and we’ll see a quick return on our investment with the savings and rebates we are making."

“Another benefit is that our warehouses are much tidier and safer. Loose cardboard represents a fire and trip hazard that could affect our insurance and put our employees in danger, so the machine was also crucial for us in making our workplace a much safer environment for everyone.

“We get a great service from phs Wastekit. They are responsive and have really understood and supported our ESG goals.”

Gardiners was named Gloucester Environmental Business of the Year 2023 and has a robust environmental strategy that includes waste segregation, a two-mile waste footprint, a strict waste to energy plan that sees all waste going to a local energy plant, and innovative reuse and recycling practices and products.
