large pile of compacted cardboard recyclable waste

The challenge: Filtration Control Ltd (FCL) was accumulating a large amount of cardboard packaging during the course of its operations. Rented skips were taking up a lot of room on the site and the automotive supplier was having to pay a waste disposal company to regularly empty them.

Eager to reduce the size of recycling bins and aware that the price of raw materials was increasing, FCL’s Operations Director, Adam Hughes had considered the option of gaining an income from selling on the
cardboard in a re-usable format.

Using a baler to compact the waste seemed a viable and attractive possibility.

The solution: Eagle-eyed phs Wastekit Area Sales Manager, Jeremy Curd, spotted the issue of excessive cardboard waste during a visit to the industrial park. He took the opportunity to present an alternative solution to Adam and the team at FCL, which included the provision of a vertical baler, V-Press 605 Eco.

Adam was won over by the cost analysis that Jeremy provided which indicated that income generated by selling on the compacted cardboard would more than cover the cost of the rental of the baler from phs Wastekit. Jeremy assessed the quantities of waste involved and the available space before recommending this model.

At the installation of the V-Press 605 Eco, all relevant personnel were trained by a phs Wastekit engineer. Adam was impressed to see that Jeremy was on hand to deal with any uncertainties or questions his team had and returned on several occasions to ensure that everything was running smoothly. Operatives were soon operating the machinery with confidence.

Jeremy was also able to introduce Adam to the idea of recycling other waste materials such as paper and confidential items, as well as looking at responsible disposal of polythene.

The benefits: FCL is experiencing a tidier site and generating more than enough income from recycled materials to cover the cost of the baler.

phs Wastekit’s V-Press 605 Eco ensures that the cardboard is securely contained in a compressed bale until it is collected for recycling. Being vertical, it takes up less floor space than the hired skips that were previously used.
Covered by a phs Wastekit maintenance agreement, the baler at FCL will receive scheduled preventative maintenance to keep it functioning properly and have unlimited access to an experienced service engineer should a breakdown occur.

This maintenance agreement provides complete peace of mind for FCL, knowing that there are no hidden costs involved. And with EN16500 compliance, FCL can be sure that their staff will be safe whenever they operate the V-Press 605 Eco.

The reaction:

ADAM HUGHES, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR FCL LTD commented: “We’ve not only cut rental costs on skips but have happily found a new income stream thanks to phs Wastekit. They have helped us to easily achieve our goal of generating income from a previously wasted resource, while also managing to tidy up the FCL site in the process.”
